Artist Research Post Three: 3D Józef Klukowski

  

Józef Kulkowski was polish sculptor ,painter and graphic. In 1932 ,he won a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics for his sculpture for sculpture “Wieńczenie zawodnika (Sport Sculpture II )” and four years later in Berlin he won a silver medal for his “bas-relief Footballers”  Culture.pl (2025).  

The sculpture depicts a model ,athlete in standing pose, without t-shirt that’s mean chest without clothes. Figure just have a shorts. Mondeo have something on his head its might be a crown  and behind him is probably lady who putting the crown on his head. On the left side of sculpture is something like “Egyptian painting in pyramid” its looks like another athlete in 2D. The author of the sculpture wants to emphasise muscles and good shape that’s also mean the man might be strong.

As Olympedia state “ In 1938 polish ski jumper Stanisław Marusarz received this sculpture he also was named Poland’s Sportsman of the Year. His father save the trophy during World War II, and it was re-discovered in 2000-2001 at an exhibition in the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw, where his trophies were presented.”

Another interesting sculpture depict a head of Józef Piłsudzki polish hero the leader who fight for independent.  He lead polish army to victory over the Red Army in 1920. He saved Europe from expansion of Russian.

The sculpture showing respect Józefa Klukowskiego to Józef Piłsudzki. The artist focused his attention on details, the face looks very seriously. His moustache ,eyes ,nose and eyebrows are catching eye. I’m not sure what material it is but looks like stone propably is hard.

The third sculpture depicts a man in running pose his hold in his hand caduceus and other his holding in the air. The sculpture looks like made in stone too but im not sure, material looks hard. The artist isn’t focus on face as before with Józef Piłsudzki face. Here face looks like random person.

Another amazing fact about Klukowski is that he was a part of Uprising Warsaw, as olimpics.com state “… He took part in the Warszawa Uprising in 1944 and was killed on a transport from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp while being moved to Bergen-Belsen “.
Uprising Warsaw is ery  important for Poland. Every year first of September in “hour zero” that mean at 17:00 many of polish people standing in one minute of silence/quiet and said “Honor and glory to the heroes!” 17:00 it was time when the action was started and people including young kids started fighting for Poland.

Artist Research Post Two: 2D Robert Riggs

 The artist which I chose for research is Robert Riggs. The painting I will discuss is "Goliath hit him with the first clean right hand of the evening" . As Christies state “This painting was sold on live auction for 50,000 USD 18.05.2021.” The artwork depict boxing fight durning the knockout. The shadows and light emphasis action and movement. Riggs used darker tone on foreground and lighter on background to make a contrast between it. To add an atmosphere and dramatic effect to this painting artist used light lines on the background. Riggs added shadows to popped out the muscles and show strength and power of punch before second guy landed on the floor.

The second artwork I will discuss is Club Figher made by Riggs and this one is lithograph. The art depict boxing match , on the foreground are two guys one is fighter/boxer and other is takeing clothes from him propably at the beginning of boxing fight. Riggs perfectly added shadows to emphasise a muscles and seriously expression of boxer and his coach face. Shadows are strong and contrast are visible and adding character and atmosphere.  The second guy might be a coach or assistant. Lithograph is created using black tone

The third lithograph by Riggs depict boxing fight too ,this time one of boxersis on the ropes that’s isn’t good position for the athlete. The boxer is trapped and Riggs show action in this, the attacking boxer using power punches and that’s what Riggs want to catch and he did it. The lithograph is very dark which giving a dramatic atmosphere. People around are excited and some have opened mouth and hands in the air. One of the watchers hold his hat in his hand in the air which emphasis the emotions there.

Riggs was very connected to my, we have got similar interesting like fine art, boxing… as britishmuseum.org state “ Riggs entered Decatur College and Industrial School Academy in 1911, where he studied fine and applied art.” It’s fantastic when we find people who walked same or similar path to ourselves.  

Another interesting fact about Riggs is that he awarded a gold medal! As we read at incollect.com "Robert Riggs was awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence by the New York Art Directors Club for ten consecutive years and received many additional awards." Receiving medals is another level of art and I will look at this topic deepther to in a near future get medal like Riggs.

*After I get the comment from my tutor I started thinking how Riggs works could be related and how I could use this research in my project. I thought to paint my athletes durning the competition with people/fans around and add to this white colour to emphasise the atmosphere.

Post on Experimentation and Development

 Today I focused on experimentation and development in my major projects that’s mean I draw 6 portraits of my teammates (I used photos as a reference) and draw it using willow charcoal on A3 sheet of paper. I made a quick sketches with various techniques one of it is hatching and other is smudging. The idea was to make it quick and different then before, that’s mean before I was focus to create proportions etc I focused on details but this time i just let go and catch the flow and draw in expressionist style. The result of my today work I leaving below:

Consideration… after I move back and look at this … proportions are not exactly what i thinking they are but im surprised how good looks rash guard (t-shirt) draw by hatching method its middle top painting. 

Major project: Drawing post Part 2

 This day I was used Indian ink to paint quick sketch for my major project. I as a reference I chose photo of my two team mates: Paul and Joe durning No-Gi sparring. The photo depict BJJ athletes in standing position durning action, both attempting their game plans and executing takedowns. Place of action is 1st Legion gym where Jamie with his sons and friends as our coaches ,accurate place of photo is mat for grappling trainings.

The motto which describes 1st Legion gym is “ 10,000sq ft of Training, Equipment & Facilities … Friendly, family atmosphere, whether you are a pro or just want to keep fit” 

Here is effect of my painting using Indian ink. First I was struggled to paint proportions correctly…

Major project: Process post part 2

 Today I started adding layer of primer before painting to make the surface of canvas smooth and good for paint. Below I leaving photo which depict the first layer of primer on the first canvas. For this task Sam gave me the primer and showed me how and in which proportions mix it with water and how to put in on to the canvas.

After I finished adding layer I hung it on to the wall but before this I used hammer to “beng” nail in to the wall as a holder for canvas  

I painted all by primer and after that I leaved canvas to dry off and I went straight to MMA and BJJ training.

When training was finished I went back to English class and after straight back to Art Factory to put the second layer of primer. Below I leaving photo of canvas painted two times by primer.

*after few days I used sand paper to make canvas smooth.

Major Project Plan - Part 2

Now im starting week six. Until this time I have done frames for canvas and then i stretched a canvas on it. I made two Indian ink sketches and one willow charcoal drawing. Last Wednesday I painted/put two layers of primer mixed with water. 

Next steps will be continue to sketching in week six, and preparing for sculpture that’s mean making a plans and sketch for sculpture.

In this week I will look at artist related with my project which suggested by Sam.

Week seven

In this week I will start creating a sculpture and paintings on canvas  

Workshop Sessions: 3D Printing \ Wood work \ Metal fabrication \ Model making and plastic \

 Workshop sessions:

1. 3D Printing:

This was my first workshops I learned how to cut materials such as plastic using special machines.

3D printing is something new for me. I was excited durning looking at working 3D machines, I red before about benefits such as cost cutting and speed of creating elements. As American Hospital Association (2022) state “One of the chief benefits of 3D printing is that it doesn’t require the cumbersome and costly equipment needed in traditional manufacturing, which greatly accelerates the speed of producing products. ” 

Some machines like water jet cutter is usable just by stuff but other ones I could use after introduction. I learned how to cut and how to create models using various of 3D printers. Below I leaving “tree” cut in plastic using pattern on computer.

2. Wood workshop:

The second workshop was wood workshop. This time I was introduced to using machines to manipulate in a wood , that’s mean cut , drill in wood and burn in it , make it smooth etc… Now I can cut wood and making things like a wood frames for canvas and much more. Below I leaving wood material after manipulation and with pyrographic.

3. Metal fabrication workshop

The next one was “Metal fabrication workshop” Here I learned how tu cut metal ,manipulate that’s mean bend it in various angels and how to weld using high temperature. After introduction I cut a pipe and weld it to round plate which before I made it smooth by sand paper. The final product leaving below ,it is pen holder made by me. 

4. Model making and plastic

The fourth one was “Model making and plastic” here I was introduced to manipulate in plastic and artificial materials. The final product I leaving below, this is a chair cut in artificial material by me, to this task I used high temperature wire.
